Why Ancient Wisdom Still Belongs in Children’s Books

Let me take you on a little time-travelling adventure.

Imagine a palm-leaf manuscript, carefully passed from one generation to the next for over two thousand years. Now imagine a curious child opening a book that brings those very words to life—with wonder in their eyes and questions in their heart.

That’s the kind of magic I try to bottle in every Kural Inspired Stories book.

The Thirukkural—a classical Tamil text made up of 1,330 couplets—is one of the greatest treasures of Tamil literature. It’s filled with timeless wisdom about how to live with integrity, compassion, clarity, and strength. But for many children, especially those growing up in multilingual or English-speaking homes, that wisdom can feel out of reach.

Born from Storytime with My Own Kids

These stories didn’t begin as a publishing project. They started at home, with my own children—Kya and Neo.

I wanted to introduce them to the Thirukkural, but I knew that simply reading out the couplets and translating them wasn’t enough. I didn’t want them to just hear the Kurals. I wanted them to experience what they meant. To feel the impact of a good decision. To wrestle with a tricky choice. To recognise the value of honesty, or the ripple effect of kindness.

So I turned the Kurals into adventures—complete with magical books, riddles, time travel, and ancient lands. And something amazing happened: they understood. Not just the words, but the heart of the message.

That’s how Kural Inspired Stories was born.

Small Couplets. Big Wisdom.

Each Kural is just two lines long. But within those lines lies centuries of thought, experience, and truth. These aren’t just moral lessons—they’re life skills, presented with elegance and depth.

And children are more than capable of absorbing that wisdom—when it’s given to them in a way that connects with their world. Through play. Through story. Through emotion. Through choice.

Why Stories?

Because stories don’t lecture. They invite.

In Kural Inspired Stories, Kya and Neo discover a way to travel back in time and meet Thiruvalluvar himself. Each book explores one Kural, woven into a world of puzzles to solve, mazes to escape, people to help, and challenges to overcome.

By the end of the story, children don’t just understand the Kural—they’ve lived it.

Why It Matters

Because Tamil children deserve to see themselves as heroes in stories rooted in their heritage—not just in history books or cultural festivals, but in bedtime stories and school shelves.

And because children from all backgrounds deserve to see the beauty and brilliance of Tamil culture—not just through food or festivals, but through the deep, powerful values it carries.

And most of all, because the values in the Thirukkural—kindness, truth, fairness, self-awareness—are just as relevant today as they were 2,000 years ago. Perhaps even more so.

 What’s Next?

More Kurals. More magical journeys. And hopefully, more children who feel seen, inspired, and wiser by the last page.

Because when children experience a Kural, they don’t just understand the meaning.

They carry it with them.

With stories and heart,

Each book is a journey into the past, filled with mystery, moral dilemmas, and lessons that remain just as relevant today as they were centuries ago.

When not writing, I enjoy watching thought-provoking movies,
trying new foods, exploring new places, reading mythologies
from different cultures, and having long philosophical
discussions over a cup of Chai.
